Description:
This build is using Small Guns, mainly focused for Turn Based Combat. Its cheap and it doesn`t require any drugs, though if you ever decide to use some your power will be increased.

If you`re tired of destroying armors while hunting for NRC Army or Patrols try this. It is support alt designated to provide fire support for Big Gunner Farmers/Gatling Builds.

Sometimes you burst, sometimes you make a short series of shoots with 14mm - what to use at which moment is your choice. I woud recommend carrying two weapons one of them being 14mm Pistol and other some kind of burst weapon.

Special:
Strength: 4 (Minimal strength for 14mm pistol).<br>
Perception: 6 (For awareness).<br>
Endurance: 10 (We won`t have room for any lifegivers so we need hp from EN)<br>
Charisma: 1 (Not very talkative).<br>
Intelligence: 4 (Need at least 200% in small guns and 150% in First aid).<br>
Agility: 10 (We won`t have room for Action Boys).<br>
Luck: 5]] (Dont go lower than that).<br>

Alternatives: (-2 to endurance, + 2 to charisma if you want to do quests withouth using mentants. -1 Agility, + 1 to Perception if you have access to Nuka Cola. +1 to Strength if you decide to pick Small Frame.)

Traits:
Fast Shot - Flesh and Bones of the build<br>
Second Traits is optional if you`re going to use only one hand consider One Hander, if you want to have more SPECIAL points pick Small Frame, if you`re going to use drugs consider Chem Reliant if you want to gain experience a little faster pick Loner

Skills:
TAG Small Guns - 200% (Remember to take Boneyard training).<br>
TAG First Aid - 150% (Qualify for Living Anatomy).<br>
TAG Outdoorsman - 100% (Qualify for Ranger).

Support Perks:
* Awareness
* Gecko Skinning
* Snakeater
* Ranger

Leveling Perks
* More Critical at level 3
* Even More Criticals at level 6
* Spray and Pray at level 9
* Better Critical at level 12
* More Ranged Damage at level 15
* Bonus Rate of Fire at level 18
* Bonus Ranged Damage at level 21(Here you can take something else too - alternative is taking [[Lifegiver for more hp, or Action Boy to suppress the addict effect of Jet or Perhaps some resistance perks like [[Even Tougher or Quick recovery, Bonus move might be good if you`re planning to do shoot-and hide behing wall tactic).
* Living Anatomy at level 24(Here you can also take something else, Living Anatomy is perfect if you`re going to do many single shoots, but if you`re going to burst opponents it might be better to take Bonus Ranged Damage+).

Drugs:
If you have access to Jet - use it, it will allow you to shoot 6 times a turn. Don`t worry about [[strength with 200% at Small Guns you shoud be probably fine even with punishment for using weapons requirming more skill than you have.Also using Cigarettes from time to time won`t hurt you.

Administrative Note
This is one player's advice to new players about how to best get started in 2238. It is intended to serve as an expansion to Advice for beginners. It was originally posted here and received positive response from many players though not all players agree on all of the points presented here.

* First download the game. JovankaB's preset game is best.
* Optional: Download alternate "evil interface" and put it in the data folder of your FOnline2238 game. It has a transparent Barter screen, so thieves have less chance of stealing from you.

* Do not forget to enable Turn-Based mode via the Config tool in your FOnline folder (unless you want to die a lot in the beginning). Normally it's set for either Real-Time or both. NOTE: if you get into someone else's encounter or in a town you still have to fight in Real-Time.

* Make sure you have player names turned on (F6) so you can see player names in-game (this is enabled by default in JovankaB's recommended files).

* Now read Advice for beginners if you haven't already.

* Create a new character (don't worry you can create as many as you want just don't log 2 alts at the same time) and make it a trader character who can wield guns. Alternately you might create an "Explorer" as BenedictKain‏‎ said in a reply to this post have a look at his reply first) Tag Small Guns, Barter and Outdoorsman. You don't have to take any Traits since they are optional. Set Luck to 1, Perception to 6, and Agility to 10. The other stats are more flexible and up to you. Charisma should be either 3 or higher. Write down your character name and password somewhere safe because if you forget, it's unlikely you'll ever see your character again. Game staff will not recover lost password info for you.

* Always check when you exit a town: is anyone following me? Check the followers list on the World Map screen under your character name to see if anyone else is listed there, or you might killed and looted when you get to your tent.

* Fire up the game and go to the World Map and check if you spawn near Shady Sands. If not, (Vault City or Hub) i strongly suggest to create another character.

* Loot the table in the shed if it is there where you spawned and hold on to that Tool; it is worth a lot to a beginner because you can make a Workbench with it at your Tent after you created a campfire. A campfire needs 3 Wood.

* Next, read about NCR below, and then travel there once you understand how risky it is to enter places that are populated by other players, even guarded places, especially NCR. Run from any encounters along the way.

* Go visit Buster in the main entry area at NCR next to the guns sign ask him for a job. If he say "go away freak" or something like that, then your Charisma is too low. Use Beer or Mentats to boost Charisma to 3 or higher. Complete the job and you should have your first Leather Jacket.

* Don't wear it yet and look around the entering point where you came if there are players. Try asking them questions and tell them that you're new. (I estimate you have around 80% chance this session to get basic free items/advice from in-game players). Do not follow them on the exit grid yet unless you want to take a big chance. Okay now you can wear the jacket (saying you're new in a Leather Jacket lowers the chance of getting stuff as you already have something).

* Shovel Poo till you level up, as noted in Advice for beginners.

* Hide any items you have in a good place when no one is around and write down where you left it. Players can find it and take it so don't leave it there too long.

* Get a Tent as soon as possible by any of these ways:
** Buy it from a player (80 to 100 caps each is common).
** Do the A Tent in the Wasteland quest and get one as a reward. Get to level 2 however you like, for example by shoveling poo in the cow pens in NCR, Junktown and Hub. At level 2, go to the World Map and you’ll notice a small green circle near one of the three starting locations noted as “unknown location”. Go there right away and get the quest from the woman inside the tent. Go to the World Map again and travel to the nearby farm (another green circle). Pick up the BB Gun near the door and fight the rats. Kill them all and pick up anything you can find. Get the Sledgehammer too; you'll need it to mine. Go back to the tent and get your reward: a Tent! Also pick up a Rope and such items. Build the Tent near NCR by going inside an encounter (click your green circle) and Use the folded tent. Remember to always check if you have followers when exiting NCR.
** Craft a folded tent. You’ll need 4 wood 1 fiber and 8 brahmin hides. Wood needs to be turned into 4 sharpened poles at a workbench. NCR has one in the center right inside the town. Hunt for brahmin to get hides or trade for them in NCR. Some players may part with them if you have something to trade or they may give them for free. Use a knife to cut fiber from a fiber plant and craft into rope at a workbench. Get a knife in the quest in NCR with the female bartender. Resist the urge to spend the caps she gives you that you need to pay her debt. Once you have everything you can simply press F to open the Fix-Boy and create a folded tent item. Build the tent near NCR by going inside an encounter (click your green circle) and Use the folded tent. Remember to always check if you have followers when exiting NCR.

* After that simply gain experience, check traders for good items and idle a bit in NCR talking to other players and such, and do what you want (perhaps create an additional character that is a good fighter).

* Try to mine some stuff in the reasonably safe mines near NCR you will need a Sledgehammer to mine. Search the forum for info on how to effectively mine HQ ores. Not there? Try Broken Hills for HQ but research first on forum.

* For leveling, i recommend Mole Rats and Mantis encounters as soon as you get your hands on a burst gun. You can sometimes burst 2 or more at once, saving ammo. Use the online encounter finder made by Opera (Google it) to find the best locations of critters like Mole Rats near NCR.

* There is a lot you can do after that, find out and have fun.

Explanation
Always create a Barter character first because you need stuff the most at the beginning. (See the Disclaimer at top of this page.) If not, at least give your character a Perception of 6 or you'll miss out on the best perk of the game in my opinion. The perk i am talking about is Awareness which gives you info about your enemies health weapons and armor if you hover over them with the mouse. You can get it in NCR from a bald guy in a bar. He gives it for free if you have the requirements, either with Perception 6 or sufficient Unarmed or Melee skill. Trying to use cigarettes to temporarily boost your Perception to get this perk, will boost your Perception but will not help you get this perk.

* If your Charisma is lower than 3, most NPC merchants won’t talk to you, and the lower it is the fewer people can follow you while hunting.
* Luck 1 would be terrible for a sniper but okay for a trader so you won’t really need high Luck. However, with the worst Luck in the game, you should expect your weapons to misfire, break or explode during combat more often.

About Shady Sands, aka NCR, a Quick Info Injection
NCR is often busy with players. Do not wear a weapon inside the center of the city. As soon as you see blue-suited cops going after you through a gate, it's too late. They will shoot you dead 5 seconds or less from their first warning. Beware of thieves. It only takes the average thief two attempt to successfully steal from you. When they try it, you'll see the same animation as First Aid or Doctor when they are next to you and by then you're probably missing some items. Beware also of bombers and bursters. Some players run up to you and detonate explosives thus killing their own character but doing damage in a crowd of others too. There are always thieves, so it pays to be paranoid, and thieves can plant explosives in your inventory just as easily as they can steal items from there. I recommend a transparent interface so you can see through it. Find it referenced on the forum by searching for “evil interface” and go to the last page in the topic and select latest version and put the files in data of your FOnline:2238 game folder. However, you're just as likely to get free armor and stuff as soon as you say you're new!
Combat Zone

Marko:

Summary
Combat Zones and Idlers are features implemented to mitigate the problem of fast relogging in PvP. Combat Zones are locations where a player just died and locations with started Town Control timer. You will be able to enter a Combat Zone without any PvP penalties only if you don't have the Idling Timer. You get 150 seconds of Idling Timer when you login. To prevent avoiding it by keeping multiple characters in game, Idling Timer also increases in places where you can idle safely.

Combat Zones
* Any public location becomes a Combat Zone for 2 minutes when a player inside dies.
* Any public location with ongoing Town Control timer is a Combat Zone (Combat Zone status stays for 2 minutes after the TC timer ends).

Idlers
* Anyone who enters a Combat Zone while having Idling Timer, becomes an Idler.
* Anyone who logs in inside a Combat Zone (if the character wasn't in game already), becomes an Idler.
* Idlers have 5% chance to hit other critters, can't Sneak, Steal and have 0 Armor Class.
* The same penalties apply to NPC followers.
* You stop being an Idler when your Idling Timer runs out or you leave the location.

Idling Timer
* Characters get 150 seconds of Idling Timer after logging in (if the character wasn't in game already or its IP changed).
* Idling Timer decreases on the World Map and in unguarded locations.
* Idling Timer is paused inside Real-Time encounters and inside Turn-Based encounters with opened combat.
* Idling Timer increases up to 150 seconds inside tents, bases, quest locations, guarded towns and Turn-Based encounters with closed combat.
* Idling Timer also increases up to 150 seconds when character is offline (but still in game).
* If you don't spend any Action Points during your turn in Turn-Based combat, Idling Timer increases by the amount of seconds of your turn.
* After entering tent or base you get 20 seconds of immunity from Idling Timer increase.
* After death you get 5 minutes of immunity from Idling Timer increase.

Idler Warning
If you have the Idling Timer and you are within a distance of 2 zones from a Combat Zone, this location will be displayed as a crossed orange circle. Anyone else (people who wouldn't become Idlers when entering this location) will see normal green circles. There is no warning before logging in inside a Combat Zone.

* Idlers have a visible tab informing them about their status.

Remember, having the Idling Timer doesn't mean you have any penalties, unless you willingly enter a Combat Zone or login inside a Combat Zone, but you can be aware of this risk and avoid logging off in dangerous places. If a location becomes a Combat Zone while you are already inside, it has no effect on you, even if you have the Idling Timer.

This is a crafter's build meant for only one thing: maximum survivability at the advanced workbenches. This is a PvP game with many player-killers. The advanced workbenches have become targeted hot zones for PvP combat, and a crafter's losses can be heavy. If you want to do a lot of advanced crafting, you'll benefit from a tougher crafter whose build is designed for deadly PK encounters. So this is a PvP approach to crafting, a drug build with high Damage Resistance and Armor Class. He is meant to wear the best armor while crafting, carry some super stims along just like any fighter would do in a Town Control operation, and wield a Mega Power Fist to fend off attackers. He can do knockdowns when he has to. Take this guy to Hinkley and you might be surprised how well he does. Yell "CRAFTERS RULE!" as you confound your PvP enemies to let them know even a crafter can win. Yes, he gets all 6 professions (tier 2) so he can potentially craft everything craftable in the game.
Use Buffout and Nuka cola to boost ST to 10 and preserve AG. With these drugs though, he will have:
-Strength 10, Perception 1, Endurance 10, Charisma 1, Intelligence 9, Agility 10, Luck 1
-Carry Weight 124, Damage Resistance 35% (with no armor), Armor Class 120
An Important Note About Armor Class
Three of your perks boost Armor Class, but AC only works when running. You stand still at a workbench and your PE is low. So you must keep an eye on what is behind you. If you see anyone unknown approach, start moving. They will have a -120% penalty to their chance to hit you if you're a moving target. This is how you can make full use of your character's perks. If you're being attacked by a single PK, punch him as you run past him. You'll likely knock him down. At that point you may decide there is no real threat and keep punching him to bring him justice, even though he's a Big Guns tank with Combat Armor and an Avenger minigun. If he has PK friends with him, this build should give you a strong chance to reach the exit grid alive and still carrying your crafted goods.

Leveling
You have to boost your Science skill to 100 and get the Educated support perk at level 2 for this build to turn out correctly. You can however get Swift Learner and Gecko Skinning at level 1. If done properly, you'll be able to get Awareness at level 3. Start punching easier targets and use jobs and quests to get to level 3. Then boost Unarmed skill to 120 at level 3 and get Adrenaline Rush, and you should be able to go out into the wasteland and start punching more critters to get to level 6 for the Toughness perk. With these first two perks, you'll have higher Damage Resistance for punching your way to more levels.
Blueprint Hunting FAQ

Marko:

These are some frequently asked questions about hunting blueprints. The information here is not coming directly from developers, but mainly from other players based on their own in-game experience hunting blueprints. Hence, some of the answers on this page might be wrong. The best way to know better is to go hunt blueprints yourself and gather your own data. Combat Zone

Note: It is important to most players to maintain some mysteries in this game, so do not expect developers to divulge much info at all about blueprint mechanics, and do not pester them about it.

Where can I find blueprints in this game?
Search in city ruins. There are many such zones in Boneyard, around San Francisco, Themepark, and Waterworks, but many more places on the map too. You might find a single zone in the middle of the map somewhere that has a hint of city ruins which might work. Blueprints can also be found in other places like in some quests, at Ares Rocket Silo, and Glow.
When I find footlockers in random encounters, what Lockpick skill do I need?
You can try opening lockers with any Lockpick skill, and wait 2 minutes and try again if you fail. Some players report successful picks with very low Lockpick skill, but the higher your LP skill, the more likely you'll open them on the first try. Most serious blueprint hunters use at least LP 150 skill and carry advanced lockpicks for a +50 boost to LP skill.
Shouldn't I use a character with Lockpick 300 for best results?
Lockpick 300 is considered to be overkill by most players, especially since you can use advanced picks with LP 250 for an effective 300 skill, but even this is considered overkill. Typically, you can open any such locker with LP 200 on the first try. Having LP 300 might help slightly decrease fails though, and thus eliminate some wait time, but such builds are usually challenged in other ways. It is easier to use a tougher character but who occasionally fails, has to wait 2 minutes, then opens certain lockers on the 2nd attempt.
Is Luck a factor when hunting blueprints?
Opinions vary, but many players believe Luck might be a factor that affects how often blueprints are found in lockers. Luck is more widely believed to be a factor for finding Fuel Cell Controllers though, which are often found during blueprint hunting. There are, however, some players who might claim they have just as much success finding blueprints with Luck 1 characters.
Is Perception important when hunting blueprints?
Opinions vary, but most players do not believe that blueprints are found any more or less often based on a character's Perception. However, having a high PE is important anyway since many lockers are surrounded by traps, and traps do not appear to the player until the character gets close enough to notice them, based on Perception. With PE 1, for example, you won't see traps even from 1 hex, so you're more likely to die with low PE. Especially when running straight up to lockers to check them and move on as fast as possible, high PE helps you see traps earlier.
Are blueprints totally random?
No, although opinions do vary even on this. If you find 124 blueprints and none of them are for a combat helmet while 15 are for the H&K CAWS, then we cannot say they are "totally random". Some blueprints seem to be more commonly found than others, and helmets seem to be among the most rare.
Are blueprints found any more frequently in lockers that have traps?
No, although opinions may vary. This is based on months and months of many hours of hunting and finding many lockers, traps, injuries, blueprints, deaths, FCC, etc.
Do you ever find more than one blueprint in the same locker?
No.
What else is found in the lockers?
There is only a short list of items found in lockers, including guns, basic armors, alloys, radios, crowbars, and small amounts of ammo including SEC. Sometimes you might find a decent assault rifle in a locker, and sometimes you even find 2 in the same locker. Sometimes you find 2 miniguns in the same locker. Other times all you find is 1 cap and nothing else. The list of possible items might be expanded some day to include more items like food, drugs, flowers, doctor's bag, rubber boots, Gamma Gulp, Cheezy Poofs, etc.
Does it matter what area I search for blueprints?
Where you search does determine what NPCs you encounter, and some areas are favored for having easier critters. But those same areas might also be favored by PKs for the same reason. Some areas are avoided due to higher risks, so it's anyone's guess where you have your best success. As for chances to find blueprints and which blueprints are there, opinions vary regarding if area makes any difference.
I need a good blueprint hunting build. Can you recommend one?
Check this list of Builds.
What is the usual frequency that blueprints are found?
Experiences vary, but you might search for 4 hours with a Luck 10 character and not find a single blueprint. Other times you might find 3 blueprints within your first 30 minutes of hunting. Usually you find 1 blueprint out of about 20 lockers, but you might find 1 locker in about 5-10 encounters.
What theories are there about blueprint hunting?
There are a bunch. One theory is that a locker's contents are generated when the encounter is first generated, so if Luck is a factor, it works best to find the encounters with a Luck 10 character, regardless of who opens the locker. Another theory is that blueprints regenerate on the map much like resources replenish in a mine. Such theories are tough to prove or disprove.
I heard we can get blueprints from following a line of quests from the Brotherhood of Steel. Is that true?
Not yet. The BoS quest-line is intriguing but is not finished yet. It dead-ends in a search for Ramirez and players eagerly await more development.
Do opinions about hunting blueprints really vary this much?
Yes.
Lockers containing medical supplies can be found scattered around the clinic; the most worthwhile ones are locked. Items you find are randomly generated, and may include the following:

* Chemical Component
* Bio Med Gel
* RadAway
* Field Medic First Aid Kit
* Doctor's Bag
* Mentats
* Junk
* Empty Hypodermic
* Stimpak

One of the rooms has a door that is jammed; a crowbar may come in handy.<br>
ATTENTION: Crowbar might not be enough, you better have tools also.

The door in the northernmost portion of the map cannot be opened.
