Hand slot

A hunting rifle in the active slot.

There are two immediate-access hand slots or item slots in your inventory, one for each hand.

The hand slot is used to hold or wield weapons, drugs, or anything that the player can pick up or use. It's also useful if you have a large amount of caps on you and you don't want to get robbed; just put the caps in one of the hand slots. Items that are held in your hands cannot be stolen.

The slot that you are currently using is called the active slot and is displayed in the mid-low portion of the screen.
