Stealing from NPCs gives you experience points - the more successful consecutive steal attempts (without closing inventory window), the more experience you will gain. Each consecutive steal attempt is more difficult.

Stealing failure

If guards in protected towns will notice stealing, your reputation will drop and you will be tagged as thief - you won't be protected by guards and players will be able to shot. The thief tag disappears after death.
