Assault rifle is good choice for wannabe snipers and bursters. It has big magazine that can hold 24 rounds of cheap 5mm JHP ammo or more expensive and not advised for snipers 5mm AP. Unlike 5mm AP ammo, 5mm JHP ammunition can be crafted without need going into unguarded mine. This makes assault rifle much better weapon of choice than hunting rifle that uses .223 FMJ ammo and can hold only 5 rounds in magazine. Assault rifle has good range (42 hex - a bit higher than hunting rifle) and damage however both of those stats are lower than sniper rifle ones. Keep in mind that assault rifle can burst (for 6 AP, 3 times without reloading), while sniper rifle can't, which makes it better weapon in combat on short distance. Also sniper rifle shot (6 AP) costs one more AP than shot from assault rifle (5 AP).
Assault rifle is in wide use over wasteland. This makes obtaining this weapon from NPCs pretty easy. You most likely will loot this weapon from ghoul crazies; raiders; NCR, VC and Hub patrols or bootleggers.
Assault rifle can be upgraded with Extended Magazine to Assault Rifle (Exp. Mag.) so it can hold 40 rounds.
